Transforming waste into valuable products, Sistema.bio is an innovative social enterprise that operates throughout Latin America, India and Africa. It strives to empower local farmers by bringing technology, training and financing to remote regions which are directly being impacted by climate change, food insecurity and poverty.
Sistema.bio’s patented biodigester system converts agricultural waste into biogas renewable energy and powerful organic fertilizer, transforming what was previously a problem into increased productivity. It’s specifically designed for small-to-medium-sized farms and slaughterhouses, with low-cost, long-term maintenance for the communities involved.
The biogas that’s created as an end product can be used for household cooking and heating water for use in the bathroom, as well as the small-scale production of agricultural products or to power electrical goods and machinery. The decomposition of organic materials during the process results in a liquid organic fertilizer known as Biol, which can be applied to community vegetable gardens, fruit trees or employed in traditional crop production.
So far the company has installed biodigesters that have positively impacted the lives of more than 25,000 people, producing clean energy and saving over 36,000 hectares of trees per year. By the end of 2021, their goal is to install biodigesters that will reach out to more than 200,000 people in 15 countries, including rural communities in Colombia, Nicaragua and Mexico.
As the divide between the “haves” and “have-nots” increases, Sistema.bio strives to be part of the global movement to make society work for everyone. By being proactive and highly sensitive to ecosystem dynamics, they’re showing how small-scale innovations can have dramatic impacts on the lives of thousands well into the future.
